Born in Dourdan in 1993, Socheata Aing is a performance and visual artist who graduated from the Institut Supérieur des Arts et du Design de Toulouse (isdaT) in 2019. She lives and works in Toulouse.
She works with the body and heritages, traditions – particularly those of Buddhism – and their representations. In her performances, she reactivates memories of her family, rituals, mimes ways of inhabiting places, and invites release from highly intimate histories in a collective way. The tones of her performances can be very different: some are tender, others joyful and collective, or they may address the question of mourning, loss, letting go, some are about effort and toil. She draws on life’s emotions to work, transmit and share, and in so doing, experiences precious moments with those present at her performances, through their laughter, tears or silences. Her performances are as modest and benevolent as they are powerful and poetic.
In 2022, she shows her work at the Musée national des arts asiatiques Guimet in Paris, at the Musée des Abattoirs – Frac occitanie in Toulouse, at the Florence Loewy gallery in Paris.
In 2023, she performs at the Institut français de Guinée Equatoriale in Malabo, Maison Salvan in Labège, Nuit Blanche, Césure Paris, Des artistes chez l’habitant festival at Fiac, Salon Jeune Création #73 in Paris and for the 50th anniversary of Capc in Bordeaux.
She takes part in the 16thevent of the annual [ frasq ] performance festival in October 2024.
